Alvar Aalto's bent-plywood cantilever chair is one of design history's most copied silhouettes — elegant in origin, ubiquitous in repetition. This piece takes that familiar base and replaces the seat with a wide woven surface, eliminating the need for cushioning entirely. The semi-transparent weave gives the chair a lightness that upholstery never could, while the open pattern ventilates naturally — the same reason this technique has been used for generations along the coast of Acapulco. Modern and timeless in equal measure. At home in minimal, bohemian and mid-century interiors.
Objects in the Derivatives Series are fabricated from reclaimed materials. Subtle surface variations are part of the material’s history and contribute to the individuality of each piece. The following terms describe the visible material character.
Great
Minimal visible surface variation. The material appears clean and refined, either preserving only faint traces of its previous life or presenting a newly applied finish.
Good
Minor surface marks or tonal variations may be visible, reflecting the reclaimed origin of the material.
Fair
Visible surface character including scratches, texture variation, patina, or signs of time from the material’s previous use.
